- promise Ultra 100 TX2 and XP pro
- Posted by nick on October 29th, 2005
hi everybody,
I got this older card installed and hooked up to two HD. One 180Gb and one
300Gb. They show fine when the PC (dell SC400) boots with the correct sizes.
But when I open the disk management I see them at 128Mb each. I tried to
update the driver but XP claims I have the latest one.
Why XP would not show the proper size when the Promise Card seem to
recognize them fine?
thanks for any help.

I had (still have actually, just no longer using it) the same Promise card.
I had the same condition and question.
I recently purchased the Adaptec SCSI/RAID Controller using the Silicon
Image SiI 0680 ATA/133 chip. My hard drives are now displayed correctly in
disk management.
Don't have an answer for you except to tell you to update the card.

Go to the promise download site here:
http://www.promise.com/support/downl...wnload_eng.asp
You need to upgrade the cards BIOS and driver to support drives larger than
137 GB, both available from the link above.
Good luck,
Woody

Sorry! Did that and it does nothing. Even with biglba enabled in Windows XP
the drive is still seen in device manager as approximately 128 gig. The
extra space on a 160 gig drive does not even show. With my new Adaptec card
the entire drive is seen, and can be utilized.

Since 128GB (132GB) is the 28 bit LBA capacity limit, would it be a far leap
to say an bios chip with a 28 LBA limit cannot address beyond that as the
address space does not exist for 48 bit LBA?

Strange. Did you upgrade both the Bios and the driver. Promise support
indicates this should work.

I had the latest bios and the latest driver. But the point is moot now as my
new Adaptec works just fine. (-:

DO NOT USE the XP drivers......Force the drivers from the manuf. I have
3 of the same cards running perfect with 160gig drives or
better.....When using the XP drivers some of the partitions were not
seen & was more trouble than they are worth.....after installing the
"real" drivers all was perfect again, go figure.
