- Question for an MVP
- Posted by Bill Tarkington on October 24th, 2005
Is it necessary to have both Service packs 1 & 2 when reloading windows xp
from scratch, or does just SP2 provide everything that is needed? I guess
what I am really asking is does SP2 roll up SP1 in itself? Thanks.

I'm not an MVP and never hope to be one, but SP2 will include SP1 if your
original CD is SP0.

Bill
SP2 is all that you need.. then go to WU and get all of the updates since
the initial release of SP2..

Service packs are all inclusive. For Windows Operating systems you
can go directly from the original or "Gold" version straight to the highest
available Service Pack. Only some very old versions of Office require
Service Packs be applied in a numbered order.
To make Fresh installs easier & more efficient you can "Slipstream" a
Service Pack's code into the Gold disk. Doing it this way the install is
smaller and directly at the latest revision. Essentially, you build a new
install disk which contains all the updated Service pack modules.

SP2 has all of SP1, though some of the SP1 updates were replaced by
components of SP2.
IOW, all you need is SP2, and all of the Updates that came out since SP2
was released.
You should learn about Common Sense Computing, to help you update.

Just an added note: When doing a repair, you will need to use an XP CD with
SP2 installed. If not, you will run into the loop of rebooting. In all of
my cases......

SP2 is cumulative. It's all you need.

<LOL> No, my boys here have been playing Halo since it hit the MS Store as
Plato's. Now that Halo2 has taken over our lives (household), the new X-Box
360 is next and only for those who signed up earlier in the year. As for
the site being down (even though I can't read the language), it was an
instant message for all on-liners via X-Box. All will be well on the 26th.
