Re-imaging, Software Assurance and Licensing
Posted by admcse on February 21st, 2006

Hello,

I have some questions related to the ever-elusive licensing area.

I am working as a consultant and I need to provide written proof or
documentation from Microsoft to a client that confirms my findings below.

I cannot speak directly to the clients licensing people, so I'm not sure
exactly what their licensing agreement looks like, but they are pretty big so
I assume it's and EA or Select.

OK, here's the scenario:
We have XP Pro workstations that were purchased OEM and we will be using SMS
to deploy the images which will be take from a reference XP machine.

From what I understand the OEM licenses cannot be used to deploy images or
other systems. In order to do this we need Volume license media (which will
also avoid activation), in addition each system needs to be covered by
Software Assurance under the clients EA.

First is this correct? Second, where can I find some documentation on it?
I looked in the EULA and Product Use Rights but I didn't see anything.

Thanks for you help.

This is a peer to peer group. Anything official about licensing would be
outside the realm of this group. Start at the link below.
