If it was a retail license and you have proof of purchase:

If it was an OEM license, you should contact the computer's
manufacturer.

You're very welcome, Windom. You're a smart person to make backup
copies. But don't - as another poster suggested - leave them sitting by
your computer! If you have a fire (insert-name-of-favorite-deity-here
forbid that happens), it won't do you any good to have your backups
there. Put them in a fireproof filing cabinet, somewhere off-site, or
at least in another part of the house from the computer.

After you've made the copy, just verify that it DOES boot. If you just
copy the files, it may well not do so.

And yes, offsite storage of a backup copy set is a good idea, since anything
physically with your computer faces similar risks.

If the version is OEM you have to go back to the original vendor to get
a replacement, not MS.
