Suggest you go to newsgroup:
microsoft.public.windowsxp.general with your question. You will get better
information as this is really an XP installation question. Have forwarded
the contents to that newsgroup.

Best thing to do here is run a drive diagnostic, something that is usually
freely downloadable from the web site of the drive or system manufacturer.
It will tell the user the state of the drive, and see if it's a candidate
for replacement. WindowsXP is far less fault tolerant than the various
iterations of Win9X, and will balk at installing where WinME/98 run just
fine if the hardware is flakey.

If the hard drive already has an existing partition and there is no un-used
disk space, you can not create a new partition. Windows does not allow you
to resize old partitions. You need to delete the partition first and then
let XP try to create a new partition. Please note that this normally erases
all files from the drive, so take a back copy of your important files.
