So I finally got my hands on this laptop computer and found after some
head scratching that the installed version was WindowsXP Pro instead of
WindowsXP Home, which was raising the not genuine issue.

The only way to fix the problem was to back up the data and install from
Toshiba's recovery discs (thank you Toshiba for supplying the discs with
notebook!).

Everything was going smoothly until the notebook shutdown partway
through the process because it was overheating when the DVD & h/d were
running continuously...a friend suggested a very low tech solution to
this -- set it up near a fan. So I let the hottest part of the notebook
hang over the desk and put a fan under it. The notebook stayed cool
enough to reinstall and the system is back up and running with no
validation/authentication issues.

Thanks to Shenan Stanley, PA Bear, Mistoffolees & HeyBub for their replies.

Thanks very much for your feedback! Looks like your suspicions were indeed
correct.

I'd go to the trouble of reporting the shop to Microsoft. They did a shoddy
job and should be called on it.

Might be time to pop it open and check on the cooling fan.
