- Red Spyware Desktop Screen
- Posted by Irene7453 on October 8th, 2005
I have run every scan I can to remove this spyware from RAZE. I have removed
all the pop ups, but am unable to remove the red desktop screen or change the
appearance of it.
Appreciate any help you can give me.

It's active in your profile. Boot the PC to Safe Mode and use
the Administrator account. Perform your cleanup operations
from there.

You might want to try the following:
Go to Control Panel and double click Display.
Click on the Desktop tab.
Click the "Customize Desktop" button.
Click on the Web tab.
In the "Web pages" box, click on any entries that want to
remove and hit the Delete button.
Click OK twice.

You say every scan you can think of. Have you tried HiJack This? You
can post a log at their site if it's not obvious to you what to remove.

Try to click at the top of the red screen and drag it down as though
you are moving a window. On the top right, you might see an x to close
it.

Please quote some of the original post when replying. Here is the OP's
question:
"I have run every scan I can to remove this spyware from RAZE. I have
removed all the pop ups, but am unable to remove the red desktop screen
or change the appearance of it."
The OP will not be able to remove the red screen by "clicking at the
top". To get rid of the desktop warning being displayed by malware, go
to the Display applet in Control Panel and look on the Desktop tab.
Click on Customize Desktop, and then click on the Web tab. You will see
that there are checkmarks next to "My Current Home Page" and probably
"Lock Desktop Items". Uncheck these. By highlighting the "My Current
Home Page" and clicking on the Properties button, you will be able to
determine the name of the file that is the message. It might be called
something like "security.html" or the like.
Click Apply and OK out when you've made your changes. Then you want to
find the *.html malware file and delete it.
If you can't enable desktop backgrounds after a virus, MVP Kelly Theriot
has a fix. Look under Wallpaper-Desktop-Disable Changing here:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_w.htm
If Display tabs are missing, run Kelly's registry edit on line 285,
right-hand side "Restore all display tabs".
Make sure your computer is 100% virus/malware-free:
