- Restore backup files created in Vista to an XP machine
- Posted by Marlon on January 13th, 2008
I have been using a machine that is not totally compatible with Vista. I
could never find the correct display drivers. After months of dealing with
this I decided to go back to XP Pro. Before doing so I created a backup
using the Vista backup utility. Now I can't restore that backup in XP and
don't have access to my files. Can anyone help? Thanks.

The backup software in Vista is not backwards compatible with XP.

Either find someone with Vista to help, pay some one with Vista to recover
to suitable media, or reinstall vista recover your backups then copy your
data to suitable media, or use a third party backup tool

Vista's backup program saves files as .zip files. You should be able to open
these in XP. Where did you save your backup to?

To an external drive. I am still running vista on one machine but when I run
the vista backup it doesn't find the backup sets on the external. Even when I
navigate directly to it it doesn't recognize it.
