- restore disk image to different drive type but same machine
- Posted by Reckoner on May 2nd, 2008
I have my win XP OS installed on a PATA drive and I have a TrueImage
image of the OS for that drive.
Question: can I restore the image to another SATA (not PATA) disk on
the same computer?
I'm trying to migrate away from the PATA drive to the SATA drive and I
don't want to have to reinstall everything. I can change the boot
order in the BIOS to accommodate the SATA drive.
Also, some installed software uses a disk signature for licensing.
Will the disk signature carry over to the new disk or will I have to
redo the software license?
Thanks in advance.

You should be able to transfer the image but you may not be
able to boot into Windows initially. I would create and test a
WinXP boot diskette or CD before the transfer.
Some software, e.g. CA ETrust AntiVirus, is sensitive to disk
changes and will require re-installation.
