Restoring backup files
Posted by Sucking Wind on January 10th, 2008

Hi, I had to replace my disk drive on my laptop so I did a full backup of the
data. I have loaded Win XP on the new hard drive and restored all the file
but afterward I can not boot from the disk. What files do I need to restore
to get my desktop back and all my programs install again?

Thanks

Joe

It would appear that you not only backed up your data but
that you backed up part or all Windows too. When restoring,
you restored part of Windows, possibly crippling your new
installation.

I do not know if your new installation can be repaired. A good
starting point would be to describe how far the booting process
goes and what messages you see on the screen.

Pegasus,

I still have access to the old hard drive and the data is still good, what
can I do to get this restored?

thanks.

You could do this:
1. Reload Windows on the new disk.
2. Buy an external USB case for your old disk.
3. Connect the old disk to your laptop and restore your data.
4. Use the case + old disk in future to perform your regular
backups.

Hi Joe,
At what point do you get an error? What do you see when you boot your
pc?
