i need to run the recovery cd but there is a problem my cd drive is not
working can i run the recovery cd on the burner drive?

Most CD burners are also CD readers, so the answer is probably yes. If
you're unsure, put ant data CD in the drive and see if youcan browse to it
and open a file in My Computer. Make sure that your BIOS is set to boot from
that drive.

Unless BIOS has changed since mine, there is only one cdrom choice in boot
option.
So you would have to install DVD as "master" by repositioning on ribbon
cable and jumper settings.

Is this an OEM XP recovery CD? If it is, the system "might" balk at
switching the cd drive configuration.

I'm sure the burner drive can read the cd.
