Searching good (!) popup blocker (which blocks also popups from www.mail.com)
Posted by Peter Eisenman on November 10th, 2005

I tried already a couple of so-called "popup blockers". But they are all NOT able
to block popups e.g. from the web page www.mail.com.

Has someone a recommendation for a really good blocker for using it with InternetExplorer 6.0?

I went to www.mail.com/ with IE^ (Windows-XP) and with Opera 8.5 (my
favourite browser) and *neither* of them showed any pop-ups. With IE6 I
could see that some cookies from the site had been blocked.

Just visited the site with IE - which blocked all Pop-ups and the
Cookie filtering zapped the 4 3rd-party Cookies that tried to be
placed. I use AdSubtract to take out adverts and it masked the
page pretty well. Out of 3 Advert blocks, only the Right side one
left a bit of the URL visible.

Haven't you installed WinXP's Service Pack 2? Or enabled IE6's built-n
pop-up blocker? Post-SP2, IE6's built-n pop-up blocker suppresses all
pop-ups at that site. Similarly, Firefox's built-in pop-up blocker also
prevents any pop-ups from that site. There's no need to user anything else.

I find Spyware Doctor very effective in blocking popups. However, mail.com
is such a lousy service; why don't you get a Google gmail account - it's
free and is a really good e-mail service.

Hi Peter

Check out Spyware Doctor from www.pctools.com

It has a built in popup blocker and is considered one of the best spyware
detection/removal tools.

Peter,

Since you're using IE6, I suggest adding the Google Toolbar and
letting its popup blocker block everything for you. Just enable it
and it does the rest. At last count, it's blocked over 2000 popups.
I haven't seen a popup in months.

I also have Spyware Doctor and regard it highly. I turned off its
popup blocker feature, however, in favor of Google's blocker.
