- selecting autoplay actions
- Posted by RandyB on December 31st, 2005
The actions listed under the autoplay tab on my removeable drives and cdr
drive have "disappeared." I can select the TYPE of file (music, pictures,
video,etc..) in the drop down but under Actions there is nothing listed in
the box. It is completely blank. I downloaded a program somebody suggested
CleanHandlers- but it won't run and I get an Active X error. I've tried
system restore but apparently the points are all corrupt since I can't
restore to before the problem began occuring. I was having "windows explorer
has experienced an error and must close" errors before I noticed the handler
problem. I don't know if they are related. The problem with windows
explorer was with the ntdl.ll file. I copied new ntdl.ll files into the
appropriate folders after renaming the original ntdll.ll to oldntdl.ll. I've
had no windows explorer errors since that- but then noticed the other problem
and am unsure if they are related. I use compact flash and secure digital
cards frequently and liked that they would automatically open and save me a
few mouse clicks. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I apologize for again mis-typing. I have been researching this issue most of
the evening. Yes, it's ntdll.dll. I am not normally so careless. I have
been to more google sites than I can count- that's where I got the idea to
re-copy the ntdll.dll file file. It apparently fixed the windows explorer
issue. What I am trying to find out now is what happened to the actions that
should be listed under the autoplay tab in properties for each of my drives
that can use autoplay. I am running Webroot's anti-spyware software and
Trend Micro PC-cillin and neither show any trouble with a virus, malware,
spyware, etc... At least they didn't find it. The *.dll file was in the I386
folder and the system32 folder on the C drive. Sorry for the mis-information
and I do appreciate your responses.

I don't know if this applies or not but you can look at it!!
Make sure that the AutoPlay feature is turned on. To do this, follow these
steps.
Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious
problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft
cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry
Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.a. Click Start, and
then click Run.
b. Type regedit, and then click OK.
c. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\CDRom
d. Do one of the following: • If the value for Autorun is 1, go to step 3-e.
• If the value for Autorun is 0, right-click Autorun, and then click Modify.
In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
e. Locate and then click the following subkey:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\Explorer
f. Look at the value of the NoDriveTypeAutoRun entry. A value of 0xb5 turns
off the AutoRun feature for CD-ROMs. To turn on the AutoRun feature,
right-click NoDriveTypeAutoRun, click Modify, type 91 in the Value data box,
select Hexadecimal, and then click OK.
g. Quit Registry Editor.
4. Verify that the Restrict CD-ROM access to locally logged on user only
option is not turned on. a. Click Start, click Run, in the Open box, type
regedit, and then click OK.
b. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
c. In the right pane, under Data, if the value for allocatecdroms is 0, go
to step 5.
d. In the right pane, under Data, if the value for allocatecdroms is 1,
right-click allocatecdroms, and then click Modify.
e. In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.
f. Quit Registry Editor.
5. If AutoRun is turned on in the registry, make sure that your CD-ROM
driver is current: a. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click
Properties.
b. On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager.
c. In Device Manager, expand DVD/CD-ROM drives, and then right-click the
CD-ROM drive that you want to update. Click Update Driver to start the
Hardware Update Wizard, and then follow the instructions that appear on the
screen to install the latest driver for your CD-ROM drive.
6. Test to determine whether the issue is resolved. If the issue is
resolved, do not complete the remaining step. If the issue is not resolved,
go to step 6.
7. Check the Microsoft Hardware Compatibility List to determine whether your
CD-ROM drive is compatible with Microsoft Windows XP. To do this, visit the
following Microsoft Web site:
http://www.microsoft.com/hwdq/hcl/search.asp
(http://www.microsoft.com/hwdq/hcl/search.asp)
If your CD-ROM drive is not compatible with Windows XP, replace the CD-ROM
drive with a compatible model.

Are you getting this error?
- - - - -
Run-time error '429':
ActiveX component can't create object
- - - - -
Type in Start, Run:
regsvr32 wshom.ocx
Re-run CleanHandlers, which should fix the Autoplay problem.

Ramesh,
That is the error I was getting. I followed your instructions and after
typing in
regsvr32 wshom.ocx I got a message saying DllRegisterServer in wshom.ocx
succeeded. But when I ran clean handlers again I got the same error 429
Active X can't create object message. Any other suggestions would be
appreciated. I've been scouring the Internet looking for a solution. Thanks
again.

Ramesh,
I did download and run Autofix.exe for repairing problems with autoplay from
the Microsoft site, and it didn't fix anything either. Here is the log from
one of my attempts. I tried 2 different drives, one was a removeable compact
Flash and the other was my CDR drive. Interestingly enough, when I put a
music CD in the CDR drive, a window opens up showing the files on the CD- but
I can't get that to happen on the other drives at all, and it used to go
directly to Media Player.
Heres the text from the test:

Randy,
Type in Start, Run:
regsvr32 scrrun.dll
If that does not help, you may need to reinstall Windows Script engine.

Ramesh,
The regsvr32 scrrun.dll worked and allowed me to run CleanHandlers. I
deleted some that were orphaned or not used at all. It didn't make a
difference however under properties/autoplay tab as there are still no
actions showing up for any of my drives that should have that option. The
autoplay tab is there and I can choose among file types in the drop down- but
the space below that is blank. I used tweakui to look at one of the handler
entries. It was the Open Folder to View files using Windows Explorer entry.
Under Args: it showed /idlist, %I, %L and it was all greyed out. Shouldn't
there be different info in the Args section, like the path to the exe. file
etc...
Thanks.
RandyB.
Have a Happy New Year!

I couldn't post all the autoplay text file since it was too long and wouldn't
let me.... Sorry about all these posts as I am a bit new at the newsgroup
thing....

Randy,
Have you used the "Scan and Fix invalid entries" option ?

Ramesh,
The regsvr32 scrrun.dll worked and allowed me to run CleanHandlers. I
deleted some that were orphaned or not used at all. It didn't make a
difference however under properties/autoplay tab as there are still no
actions showing up for any of my drives that should have that option. The
autoplay tab is there and I can choose among file types in the drop down-
but
the space below that is blank. I used tweakui to look at one of the handler
entries. It was the Open Folder to View files using Windows Explorer entry.
Under Args: it showed /idlist, %I, %L and it was all greyed out. Shouldn't
there be different info in the Args section, like the path to the exe. file
etc...
Thanks.
RandyB.

Yes I have. It ran and said "done." I've rebooted but the various
actions-which I can see via the tweakui program- are not showing up under the
drive properties/autoplay tab when I right click a drive icon to view.
Thanks.

Randy,
Open Regedit.exe and navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\AutoplayHandlers
Export the branch to a REG file (use the File/Export option)
Send the REG file to me via mail, or upload to a webpage (if you have one).
If you're going to send it over to me via mail, then unmunge my mail id by
removing the XOX. string from the address.
