- Service failed to start...
- Posted by Mags on October 14th, 2005
Hi, hope someone can help. Every time I log on to XP, I receive an error
message in Event Log stating 'The Digi Cam Pro Video Camera device Service
failed to start. The system could not find the specified file. I had
previously installed my digital camera as a webcam but decided to uninstall
it as I was unlikely to use it as such. I have checked in Services, msconfig
and in Startup Control Panel, but I cannot see any reference to this Service
anywhere. I braved a look in regedit which shows something called
DCAMUSBSQTECH, but a look on Google leads me to believe that has to do with a
CD burner. It is just one of those annoying niggles I would love to get a
solution to, so if you can help -

Actually a number of the Google results reference SQcaptur.sys, which is a driver file. Open Regedit and locate the key in question, in:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es
Right click the DCAMUSBSQTECH key and select Export. This creates a backup of the key. Now right click the key again and select Delete. Reboot. If the prompt goes away, this was the cause. In case of a problem, you can re-import the Registry key that you exported earlier.
If in doubt, export the DCAMUSBSQTECH key and post the contents here.

Thanks for the reply.I gave it a shot but the message still appears. On
reading the info when I clicked DCAMUSBSQTECH, it does mention SQ
Capture.sys, but it seems to relate to a previous camera I had - a DSC model.
I haven't yet imported the key back to regedit - if that is the case, then it
will not be required anyway. A basic question, but how do I copy the contents
of the reg. key to you - can I open it in Notepad and paste it from there?

Yes, that's all you need to do, copy and paste. You may also want to see my web site, www.dougknox.com, Win XP Utilities, Startup Programs Tracker. This small utility will track the more commonly used startup vectors, as well as list running processes and services. Since this service isn't "starting", it shouldn't be listed in the Running Services section, but sometimes apps call themselves a "service" when they're really not.

Hi again, Doug.I have downloaded and run your Tracker utility just
now.Everything identifiable except WDFMGR.EXE. I also just looked in Device
Manager (your use of the word 'capture' previously had rung a bell - in
Sound, Video and Game...is listed a Legacy Video Capture Device, WDM Video
for Windows Capture Driver. Any possibility that it is the problem or is it
meant to be there? When I used my camera as a webcam it was in Movie Maker. Is
this possibly the .exe file mentioned in your program. That is a really
informative utility by the way - very interesting and lists a fair bit more
than anything I am currently using. The camera mentioned in regedit was
definitely my old one - I just checked it's booklet.

No, WDFMGR.EXE is the Windows User Mode Driver Manager, and while it might have some impact on your camera's driver, I doubt it would have anything to do with the service in question. If you'd like, you can post the contents of the Startup Tracker's window, less the running processes and services sections (since the service isn't starting, it probably wouldn't be listed.
Other than that, go through the Registry and look through each of the Services sub-keys in:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es
Pay attention to the DisplayName value and the ImagePath values. These may give you a clue as to what's what. And last, but not least, when you run MSCONFIG, go to the Services tab and check the box Hide all Microsoft Services. That will narrow the list down to what's non-MS, such as software that would be installed for your camera.
What's the model number of your DigiCam?

Thank you, thankyou, thank you! I hadn't actually considered that, trawling
through regedit.Thankfully did not have too far to go - found it under 'c' -
Ca 536 av to be precise.Rebooted and it has gone - how nice it feels! Thank
you for sparing me your time and your patience. I will definitely be giving
your website another look too - seemed really interesting. Thanks again
