Share a shared folder : )
Posted by Nime on June 27th, 2008

Hi

People want me to publish a folder which one located on a computer.
Files & folders are shared and named as "docs".

I've got a public Windows 2003 Server Web Ed. with real IP
and private Windows 2003 SBS with shared folder "docs"

I've tried to add IIS a virtual folder "\\sbs\docs\" as
"http://mydomain/docs/".
However when I browse with IE, a login window prompts... I tried all
possible
user/pass combinations but no luck :/

"Everyone" may read&write&list the folder "\\sbs\docs\" (both Security and
Share).

How can I make the folder public/accessible from internet for dumb people,
I mean who cannot use ftp, rdc, etc. They just type \\mydomain.com\docs
or http://mydomain.com/docs

Thanks...

Plus, I cannot share a network folder (already a share).
I can see \\sbs\docs as W: drive on web server but I cannot share again this
network folder
so I cannot open as \\mydomain\docs

This isn't really an XP question, you would be better asking in the
appropriate newsgroup for server questions.

A webserver can have a number of different security configurations. Most are
set to publish a 'homepage' in each subfolder, typically index.htm,
default.htm etc. If no homepage exists they may return a directory-listing
instead. Or, they may be set to disallow this.

The dumb people delimiter is always a problem. You might want to setup a
n FTP server like Filezilla and let your users get their files using
their browser. Use the following line in the browser:
ftp://nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn.
