- shared printer
- Posted by Daniel Kaplan on September 27th, 2005
ok, goes like this:
i have at home a windows 2000, and an XP machine (which has the printer).
the XP machine can access the printer hooked up to the 2000. i select it,
it asks for the username and password (which i enter) and voila!
but shutting off the XP makes me have to do the whole thing again. it still
sees the printer, but then says i don't have access to it, or privileges.
so i have to delete it off the XP and reinstall it.
anyone have any clues?
thanks

1. Create the same Username and Password on BOTH computers (WinXP and Win2K)
Therefore if you logon as Daniel, then the account "Daniel" should be on both computers
usinmg the exact same password.
2. Highlight the shared printer and choose Properties. Select the "Security" tab and
make sure "Everyone" has the right to print.

did exactly as you said...created another account on the 200 machine called
Daniel with password ABCD
then on the XP, i took my admin acct, Daniel and gave it the password ABCD
and then on the 2000 machine gave EVERYONE the right to print.
so the 2000 machine is logged on as ITS administrator, and the XP as Daniel.
and the same thing happens.....

It soulds like so weird.
Have you logon both computers with Daniel at the same time for a test?
I would uninstall the printer from Win 2000 and then reinstal an re-share
the printer.
If you share a folder in Win 2000, and then access the folder from XP,then
turn off XP machine, then turn on and test this issue again, does this issue
occurs as shared printer?

| weird, this mornign it all worked. i acesses the 2000 HD using the same
| name and password, and voila, the printer worked without having to
| reinstall. oh well.
|
| now if someone could just tell me how to set it up so that the XP
| automatically logs on to the 2000 using the only user accoutn and password
| that the XP is running with. why make me type it all over and over and
| over...
|
Install TweakUI and set the "Logon automatically at system startup" in the logon tab.
