- sharing files or not to share files
- Posted by Scoobie on October 29th, 2005
I have a shared computer, and I want certain files not to be accessable to
the other user of this computer. How in the simplest terms can I do this,as I
am not all that computer savvy.

Hi,
Make sure they are under your local user profile (My Documents is easiest)
and privatize the folder. That's about as easy as it gets. Or you learn how
to set permissions:

Which checkbox?
What's the version of XP you're using?
See:
You Cannot Select the "Make This Folder Private" Option:

Hi,
Then it indicates that you either:
a) do not have the folders located under your user profile
and/or
b) are not using NTFS for the file system but rather are using FAT32
Both conditions must be satisfied for this option to appear. However, you
can use permissions-based access as long as the file system is NTFS.

OK, let's back up a little bit .... the file that I am trying to 'hide' is
from a program ... it is pictures ( that are not in the "MY PICTURES" folder)
in order to get to these pictures I need to go to my computer, program
files, the name of the program,PHtoxxx,PHOTOxxx (again), and finally PHOTOS)

Hi,
Permissions are applied on the folder level. You can move that photo to your
user profile (like under "My Pictures") and privatize it (where the option
will no longer be grayed out). Otherwise, you would need to change
permissions on that program folder, and other users may no longer be able to
use it.
