I have XP 6.0 and recently Excel and Word have been very slow to open and
close, especially if they are attachments in and e-mail. I am starting with
this bulletin board to see if anyone can help me speed up the processing.

Run a spyware/adware/malware utility and see if you have been a victim of something that
has been installed without your knowledge. I prefer Spy Sweeper.

Others might suggest freebies like Ad-Aware SE, which does not seem to find all that Spy
Sweeper does.
Also, have you defragmented your hard drive? Have you compacted your Outlook Express
folders? If that is your default email program? (File Menu/Folder/Compact All Folders)
