- Slow SP2 Desktop response
- Posted by Simon on November 17th, 2005
Hi,
I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 running XP SP2. 1Gb RAM and plenty of free HDD.
I'm running on a LAN joined to W2000
Intermittently, my start menu, task bar and quick launch do not respond.
However Alt+Tab will happily scroll through my running apps and I can use
the running apps without problems.
Task Managaer shows no CPU hogging and plenty of free RAM.
After a couple of minutes, my PC can spring in to life and execute all the
mouse clicks I had applied to start menu etc and there is a flurry of window
and pop-up activity.
I run numerous Spyware and Adware removal tools and have in the past found
these to locate and fix the problem. Increasingly, Spyware/Adware does not
appear to be the problem because the scans I run find nothing critical and
the problem will persist. The problem can also rectify itself after some
time without any intervention and 'appears' to start with Explorer grinding
to a halt,
unable to expand the folder tree and refresh the file list.
Thanks.

See if there is the "Microsoft TCP/IP Version6" protocol installed. If
this is the case, uninstalling that protocol usually resolves that
problem.

I tried this and no obvious difference.
My desktop continues to throw go-slow spasms.
I have run anti-virus, adware and spyware.
I have disconected all of my mapped network drives.
Anything else?
