- Sony RootKit on Music CDs, Detection Tool
- Posted by R. McCarty on November 3rd, 2005
Since it's come to light that Sony Music CDs are installing a RootKit on
PC's, here is a tool to help check your system for RootKits.
F-Secure offers a Stand-Alone RootKit detector called BlackLight.
This is a "Beta" tool, but doesn't require installation - just the
executable
to run. While the preferred tool is still SysInternals RootKit Revealer,
this one provides a quick scan of your computer.

Please note the supported OS'es listed at the bottom of the website.

Also please not that most "RootKit" detectors will cripple your PC's CD
audio player, if/when you remove the Sony DRM system. Sony is working on
providing a "fix" for this, but you seems to have to call then for the
solution. This sucks!

The Sony "fix" only unhides the rootkit, it does not remove it.
