Taskbar, Dran 'n Drop, Restore - Problems with these and more!

My Windows XP Pro Pc (SP2) is behaving decidedly odd. There is no
taskbar, when I start Excel it tells me that there is no Linking and
Embedding. I can't drag and drop in explorer, but sometimes cut and
pasting text using ctrl-c and ctrl-v will work. I tried to start
system restore but that just shows a title bar and a white screen.
Booted in safe mode but it behaves just the same.
Most programs seem to run O.K - excel runs (but no linking or
embedding), word, access, explorer (without the drag 'n drop), control
panel etc.

This all started after I removed some OPC trial software from the
machine. I've done a registry scan but that seems ok and as far as I
can see I haven't deleted any files from the windows directories.

Pointers on where to go now would be a godsend.

System restore is not perfected. Next time learn to use another registry
backup/restore program, [many free], as another option.
