- Temporary Freezes
- Posted by Gary D. on October 2nd, 2005
I have XP Home, P4, 3.0GHz, 1GB RAM (640MB free on average).
Recently, when I use keyboard shortcuts, Windows appears to freeze/stall for
anything up to 45 seconds and then everything returns to normal.
This doesn't happen ever time and it tends to happen most often just after
have started my PC, even after allowing a few minutes for windows to finish
all of its start-up processing.
It doesn't matter which keyboard shortcut I use.
I have checked them and they are all set up correctly. I have also run Norton
WinDoctor and nothing erroneous has been detected.
I cannot locate the cause of this.
Any ideas?

Try a different keyboard. It sounds like your Alt or Ctrl key(s) are not
functioning correctly. If a different keyboard doesn't work, then try
attaching a keyboard to a different port; i.e., if you are using a ps/2
keyboard try a usb one and vice versa. This will help you determine if
the problem is the keyboard or the motherboard. The fact that the
problem most often occurs from a cold start indicates that some piece
of hardware isn't making a connection when cold and when it warms up
the connection is made.

Thanks for the tip. I'll see if I can borrow another keyboard.
