- terminal emulator in XP?
- Posted by Mike on April 12th, 2006
Hi,
Is there a terminal emulator built in to XP or do I need third party software?
I am trying to access a switch using my laptop com port attached to a
console port on the switch. Switch instructions say I need a VT100 terminal
emulator.
Thanks,
Mike

I'm guessing there's no built-in emulator, but only because the tech guy who
services my company usually does things as cheaply as he can, and he ended
up giving remote users something called FacetWin, which works very nicely.
We need to access a Unix app on our home server. www.facetcorp.com

It would be worth trying the builtin telnet command for this. That
will probably work; if not, try Google.

You can try the included version of HyperTerm. It is limited in functionality
but should have most vt100 functions.

I know that! The original question was does XP have a terminal emulator
built-in to access a console serial port (COMM) on a network switch. This is
not using TCP/IP or any other network devices.

Yes, Hyperterminal. The xp-included version is fine, but there is also a
freeware version that is slightly better:

its vt-100 emulation is one of the best, in fact. it's much better at
telnet than xp's included telent.exe application too.
