trouble installing applications and updates

I have a new computer running XP pro. I have a big problem installing any
program. It gets half way thru then stops. Doesn't seem to matter what.
Office, updates, whatever. There is no error report in the event viewer, I
have turned off Norton while installing, if I leave it for an hour it will
finally finish loading. But it always gets halfway thru and hangs. I don't
know what to check. I can still use windows normally when things are loading
so it doesn't freeze the system, it just hangs installing. Any ideas?

New computer problems = call the place you got it from for tech support.
If you want to do some preliminary checking, here are some hardware
troubleshooting steps:

Check and see if the drives are using PIO Mode instead of DMA Mode:

And of course, make sure from the software end that your computer is
