Unable to assign drive letter in Computer Management
Posted by Richard on November 30th, 2005

Hi

I had to recently recover my c drive from a ghost image taken a few months
ago.

All went well, but after restoring the drive, I'm unable to read the d drive
partition.

In computer management it shows the drive name, capacity, free space, and
says that it's a "healthy (unknown partition)" but i'm unable to assign a
drive letter to it to recover some of the files on it.

Anyone have any ideas how to recover this drive?

Thanks

Richard

Richard,

Please clarify first:
Are C: and D: separate hard disks or just partitions on 1 hard disk ?

Some Imaging recovery processes will "Hide" other partitions on
the physical drive to avoid lettering issues. Drive Image 6 (2002)
does this when recovery is done from a DOS-Boot setup.

Hi John

They're partitions on 1 hard disk.

Thanks

Richard

Richard,

When creating the Ghost image, did you choose Creat Image "From Disk" or
"From Partition" ?

Not sure to be honest, it was created a few months ago... anyway to check?

Rich,

Two options remain:

1. I'm not wether this is possible, (never tried).
You might have made a complete Hard Disk image (including C: and D
but chose to restore "To Partition" C: only.
(Not sure here) You would have to restore "To Partion" D: and your set.

2. If you intended to image the whole Hard Disk (including partitions C: and
D
but chose to image Partition C: only, you don't have a Partition D: image
(unless you made it separately). This is very bad news, no D: image !
Partition D: remain unformated which explains you findings.

I hope for the best. Maybe someone else can provide suggestions here.
