- Uninstall error: An error occurred while trying to remove Program_
- Posted by DaChamp on October 18th, 2005
I'm a newbie to the computer world. Just got my laptop which has Windows XP
2002 ver5.1: Service Pack2. After using it for a month, I'm trying to
uninstall some programs under the 'control panels' but getting the following
error:
"An error occurred while trying to remove Program_name. It may already have
been uninstalled. Would you like to remove Program_name from the Add or
Remove programs list?" Yes/ No? (buttons)
(Whereby the program name is the name of the program i'm trying to uinstall).
When I click on 'Yes' it removes it from the control panels list but it
still remains on my windows operating system. Can anyone help here?. I've
tryed to do searches on the knowledge base but to no avail.
Much appreciated,

Hi
Try re-installing those programs and then uninstalling them. That error
message would suggest that the file needed to uninstall has somehow either
become corrupt or has somehow been deleted.

When I click 'Yes' - it removes it from the program list however it is still
appearing on the Start/Programs/ windows list.
Unfortunately some 'freewares' programs that I've installed does not have an
'uninstall' option on the Start/Programs/ windows list therefore I can not
uninstall.
(definitely serves me a list not to install freewares.....Arrgghhh!)

Right click on the proram in the start menu and find the path to it's
location on the hard drive. If the program itself is already uninstalled,
then just delete the folder containing the program. Hope that helps.

Ragman,
I don't think thats the right way to remove the program, it may leave
unecessary files/logs etc still on my operating system
It looks like I may have to re-install Windows XP operating system all over
again. Does anyone out there have an ebookor work instructions or 'Dummies
guide to reinstall windows xp'?
So I can fix this problem.
Much appreciated on anyone's help

Champ,
Re-Installing windows for a program name that won't go away. I feel
that it's like someone said earlier "That's like buying a new car because the
tire keeps going flat". I have been in your shoes before and after a few
attempts to remove it with the Add/Remove feature, I found it and deleted it.
I've had no problems with it since. If you feel that re-installing windows is
your last option then don't forget to copy the files, drivers, and program
"installers" that you want to keep. Sorry I wasn't more help.

Then just delete the folder the app is in.
