I have Windows XP in a year-old Lenovo laptop. Occasionally in the past, but
now frequently, any open screen starts to become unstable, and flicker out of
control on the vertical axis. Moving the cursor makes the screen careen
wildly up and down.

Can anyone give me advice?

I had a similar issue on a Compaq laptop a few months ago and it turned out
that the video cable was going bad. If downloading and installing the
latest video drivers for your model doesn't fix it (I doubt that it will but
its worth a shot) then investigate the hardware (have a tech look at it).
