Using Patition Magic 8 , I screwed up. Hard drive error on Boot
Posted by exe opening as excel files on April 17th, 2006

I did a most stupid thing! I transfered most of my DATA Files from this
computer to another computer using my LAN. I was using Partition Magic 8 to
combine partitions on the C: Drive, (dumb thing to do without a backup)
unfortunately for me when it rebooted it comes back whith an error message
"read error on the hard drive" and tells me to reboot. So I reboot, and
reboot and reboot....

I'm no expert, and you will hopefully get better-qualified advice, but
since no-one else has answered yet:

Have you tried to boot from the CD? Either your Windows CD (select
the 'repair' option when asked) or a bootable rescue disk from
Partition Magic? If you can, then you may be able to access your
files, even though you can't run Windows.

When running the repair option on the Windows CD, you may be able to
recreate your boot record using FIXMBR (type FIXMBR at the command
prompt and press Enter). But try to rescue as much as you can before
attempting this, just in case. I have just used it to get rid of a
Linux boot menu, and I had no problems despite the frightening warning
displayed! Suggestion at your own risk, though.

Use the rescue disk that Partition Magic prompted you to create at the
beginning of the process; it should be able to restore the hard drive to
its original state.
