Where does xp store downloaded update files
Posted by V S Rawat on February 18th, 2006

I have set my xpsp2 to "automatic update" with the option:
"download files but let me choose when to install" or something
like that.

It downloaded two files "ms installer 3.1" and one "xp update".

I wish to store those files safely, so that when I format/
reinstall xp, I can directly run these files to update xp, and
can avoid net traffic.

But it doesn't show where is it storing the downloaded files.

Could anyone please tell me that?

Once they're downloaded and installed via windows update windows deletes
them? You can go to windows update and look through the windows update
catalog and download them manually and back them up. You can also download
all the other updates that have been releasased since SP2.

Please repost if you find the fault

Hi,

C:\WUTemp
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution

The above are the more common store points, and most update files are
deleted after they have been installed. But to make life easier just go to
the update site and use the administrator options. Here you can download any
of the updates in a stand-alone format that you can save to disk for later
use.

Thanks Rick,

There was no WUTEMP, but I got several subfolder under the
second one.

However, could not make out the names of the files, and sizes
were also small.

I Think I would let xp handle it, though my heart bleeds at
wasting bandwidth by multiple download of the same thing.
