The defrag does not do any type of integrity check on the drive
before it runs. So, if the drive is marked "Dirty" you could have
a abrupt halt. You should open a Command Prompt window &
type Chkdsk C:
If any errors are found, Chkdsk will display a recommendation
to run with a fix/repair qualifier. A /F /R can only be done prior
to XP fully loading, so it will ask if you want to do the Chkdsk at
the next boot - simply answer Y.
As I mentioned in another post, Chkdsk can in the course of
fixing errors/inconsistencies remove data. So before you ever do
a Chkdsk with Fix/Repair be sure your data is backed up.

Hi

What, if any, error message do you see? Are there any 'Errors' in the Event
Viewer that may help with the problem?
