- win xp sp2 repair
- Posted by Wiley C on November 2nd, 2005
Recently, I have encountered 2 computers with similar problems.
PC 1: Local build, Win XP Home SP2; customer has Win XP SP1a CD, authentic
Microsoft. PC built & OS loaded Jan 2004.
I can run sfc /scannow, but I am unable to run IE.inf & IEFix. I am asked
for the Win XP SP2 CD. I have used the authentic Microsoft Win XP SP2 update
disk that I received from Microsoft, but the repair programs ask for
iexplore.exe on the Win XP SP2 CD, but I can't find the file. I have tried to
point the repair utilities to c:\windows\servicepackfiles\i386 and
c:\windows\$ntservicepackuninstall$, as well as c:\program files\internet
explorer.
PC 2: Compaq Presario SR1030N, Win XP Home SP2. Customer has no CDs. PC
purchased April 2004. Owner uncertain how PC was upgraded to XP SP2.
I can not run sfc /scannow. I can not fix IE, as described above.
I am hoping for solutions other than:
1. go out and buy a Win XP Home SP2 CD;
2. re-format, re-install for PC 1; run OEM system recovery for PC 2.
Thanks for your thoughtful replies.

Customer 1 needs to slipstream the Win XP SP1A CD with the SP 2 Patch before running
SFC.

TA:
I have tried methods discussed in 2 of the links you provided.
Each time, I receive the same error message.
My machine: Win 2000 SP4; Athlon 1800+; 512 MB; 50 GB free of 80 GB NTFS.
Method 1:
Reference: http://www.msfn.org/articles.php?act...showarticle=49
Win XP SP1a CD
Win XP SP2 download from Microsoft.
Also tried using Win XP SP2 update disk
Method 2:
Reference: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=248
Win XP SP1a CD
Win XP SP2 download from Microsoft
I have:
cleared cache, history, temp, temp internet;
rebooted;
turned off, turned on;
tried 2nd method.
Error Message: update.exe has generated errors and will be closed by
Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being
created. "OK".
Where is the log?
What should I do with it?

Try slipstreaming using a WinXP computer.
As to where the log is, no idea.

TA:
Thanks for the reply.
I was able to create a slipstream, on a Win XP computer.
I used the information at this link.
http://www.petri.co.il/windows_2000_...pstreaming.htm
The only modification I had to make involved the location of one of the
subfolders.
WC
Sincerely,
WC
