windows explorer - how can I change the default display?
Posted by friesian@zoocrewphoto.com on September 24th, 2005

I prefer the way that windows 98 shows the files in windows explorer.

With windows xp, I have to click the button for the folder view every
time, which isn't a big deal.

But every time I open a folder, it goes back to showing icons when I
want to see file names, type, size, etc. I have to click on the menu to
get the details view.

How can I get it to stay that way ALL the time?

I like to highlight and drag groups of files around which is a lot
easier if they are in a compact list. I also like to check file dates.
And I hate waiting for it to load the thumbnail photos when I want to
get on with the job.

Also, I would like to see how much space is available on a hard drive,
or being used on a disk or in a folder. In windows 98, there was a bar
at the bottom of the screen that showed how much space was used by the
selection (folder, disk, hard drive) and available space. Is there a
way to get this in windows xp? I can right click and choose properties,
but it seems tedious to keep doing this when there used to be a bar
that automatically gave the information.

I do a lot of transferring files between computers, CDs, memorory
cards, and even folders within the hard drive. I love my newer
computers, but this really drives me nuts.

Any way to fix these issue?

Yep. I have to do it for every session. It won't keep the settings
permanently.

And I still can't get the bar at the bottom that shows space usage and
availabilty.

Since you obviously know how to fix these issues, could you tell me
how?

Fries,

You can have the display of the C drive expanded out like 98 use to do
by adding a couple of switches to the Explorer shortcut.

Right click the Windows Explorer shortcut and select Properties. The
Target window should read %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe. Go to the end of
the .exe and add a space and then add /n,/e and then click the OK
button at the bottom. The new target should now be
%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /n,/e .

You can see the amount of free space on the drive by turning on the
Status Bar from the View menu. The Status Bar also shows the amount of
objects in the folders and the amount of space they use. However the
used space figure does not included the contents of the sub folders.

Hope this helps.
