Windows Explorer is sloooow to respond when browsing network drives...
Posted by akvitka@gmail.com on December 9th, 2005

I've noticed a problem on my desktop where the Windows Explorer takes
an unusually long time to list the directory when I try to browse to a
NAS box, or a mapped network drive. I mean up to a minute or two. If I
try to cancel the process by closing the window, I get the *Program Not
Responding* message box.

I tried doing the same thing from another XP Pro machine without any
problems. The mapped drives and the NAS pop up in seconds. BTW, this is
in a small 4 computer Workgroup with nothing special as far as a setup.

I disabled all running apps, scanned for viruses and exploits -
nothing. I'm puzzled. Anyone knows what direction I need to look to?

Removing all shortcuts from 'My Network Places' will return the system
response to
normal.

Every time you open a file via a UNC name, Windows XP will automatically add
another shortcut to the 'My Network Places' folder - so the issue tends to
get
worse over time.

You can prevent the automatic addition of shortcuts by setting
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Pol icies\Explorer\NoRecentDocsNetHood to 1
