I am a brand new user to Windows XP.

I am using a brand new HP/Compaq Presario with XP Home installed.

I had this reminder box popping up, telling me to make my back-ups of my
original Microsoft Software.

I didn't do it right away, but it is now done.

Now, the same box is there, it is malfunctioning with some kind of
"scripting" error, and the contents of the window are blank, and the only
way to remove the pop-up is by ctrl-alt-del.

I tried HP support, and they wanted me to kill all but a very few start up
processes.

Does anyone know specifically which "start-up" I need to remove?

There were at least 4 that had some kind of HP Boot Up definition to them. I
guess I could start there.

I just figured that HP would know right away. Unfortunately , they did not.
Maybe I can still call Compaq?

Seeing as how it is NOT a part of Windows XP, it must be from HP. I would
listen to them I think!

Learned something new, I can click on the running process, and then select
the thread. However, that thread is NOT clearly stated in the start up check
list.

That running process is listed as HPSdpApp.exe using about 20k or memory.

Anyone know... ?

I guess XP is better for drilling into what's running in which memory space.
I still don't like the whole start menu thing, maybe just not used to it.

Go to SysInternals and download a tool called AutoRuns. It should
provide details (Via Publisher) to let you find the Nag for creating
the Image set.

*Unfortunately, almost all new PCs come from the Factory with all
kinds of "Fluff" and software many users will not use or need. It's a
real shame to get a brand new PC and have the loading and effects
of software/Startups & Watchdogs that the vendor sees fit to install.
Usually, on new setups I recommend that people use Add/Remove
programs in Control Panel and do some tidying up.

Oh, exactly.

Like Microsoft built an empire by equipping every PC ever sold with it's own
operating system. Now this stupid company that assembled a box of parts from
China thinks they have a better idea and it is *their* stuff I *should* be
seeing every time I turn on my computer.

CLick start...
Click run
type in "regedit" without quotes
navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run, and
delete the hpsdpapp.exe run key then reboot..
that should fix your problem!
