I have this problem with one of my machines. I have an IBM ThinkPad T42
running Windows XP Pro SP2. I have Windows Updates set to notify me when
new updates are available. The problem that I am having is that when new
updates are available they will download and if I have to reboot my machine
the same updates are always downloaded again. Windows constantly tells me
the same updates are available even after I have already downloaded and
installed those updates.

I do not want to turn off Windows Update so is there a way around windows
from downloading the same files without turning off Windows Update on my
machine? Again I have this problem with only this laptop.

Often this problem can be resolved by downloading the updates first, then running them from the local drive. In the details of each update there should be a link to click for more information, and that page should have a link for direct download of the update.

Windows Update is not something you turn on. Sounds like you are
talking about Automatic Update.

Best way to patch your computer is to cut out the middleware crap that
has its own problems, and run the patches manually yourself. This
