- windows upgrades; to do or not to do
- Posted by kellrobinson@billburg.com on March 29th, 2006
As a result of a recovery operation, I now have a *virgin*
three-year-old WindowsXP operating system. Should I go online and get
all the upgrades MS brought out for windows over the last three years
Expert opinions?

Yes, generally you need all Critical Updates.
Start with Service Pack 2 from CD, Step 1 on this link:

Then go for the rest.
Now is the best time to install the updates since you have a fresh
installation and less likely to have malware or other conflicts with
updates.

I went to that site but it's unclear what to do.
Excuse me, but I don't even know what you mean by "Step 1."

Scroll down to the 1, that's Step 1.

YES, ABSOLUTELY!!!!
But Install a firewall software, antivirus, and antispyware before
connecting the computer to the internet. Otherwise you'll most likely
end up with some unpleasent, non- microsoft updates as well.

Step 1 about 1/4 down the page gives options for obtaining Service Pack 2 on
CD.

Absolutely.
Apply the SP2 update and then use Windows update to apply updates released
since SP2.
Download the network SP2 or use a MS supplied SP2 CD.
