- Windows XP at Home has crashed
- Posted by TB on March 21st, 2006
I am running Windows XP @ Home with a dail-up modem to access the internet.
Well my system has crashed and has also really slowed down. TAkes a minimum
of 5 minutes to reboot. Windows no longer can find or access my PCI modem
either. The Wizards thinks the modem is in a COM1 port.
Another problem is with Task Manager. When I click the "Network" button Task
Manager crashes with a "not responding"
I tried to run System Restore but an error message comes up telling me to
reboot and try again... I reboot and try again and the same messages comes
up..
I also have tried to run Winows XP repair and that didn't help.
Well I am at a loss so any help would be appreciated..

Uninstall your modem in Device Manager, reboot and let Windows reinstall it.

Tired that but again the Wizard comes up and will list generic modems, other
then my PCI port modem and ask if I want to install in COM1 port.

I tired that also; didn't work.
Here's another problem which may be related.. I can't open any of my Word
documents. If I double click a Word document icon, MS Word will try and open
the document then a error message will state unable to open document or
document is unavailable. If I start with a new Word docuemnt I can import the
document though. I right clicked on the icon to check the document's
properties to verify that the document was being opened with Word and it was.
I noticed the document was is rtf (rich text format) though... So as a
addiotnal check I copied some of the Word documents on a CD and tried to open
them on a different computer and they opened right up...

I'll concentrate on the modem issue
"didn't work" doesn't realy help, when windows started did it find "PCI
communications device" [or simillar popup window]and did you recieve any
error msgs trying to set it up ?.

I can launch the modem by double clicking the icon. What happens is a picture
of a phone comes up (which is normal). But the "stand-by" light never goes
off. It should switch to ready in 5-10 seconds.. About 5-10 minutes after
this an error message comes up " Can't start Telephony tools" --> I believe
this is my modem software.
I was reading through some of the help pages for MS Word and came across an
article about some Virus programs interfering with Word documents. So I was
trying to check to see if my McAfee Virus Scan was interfering when Wizards
tries to install my modem software.. I can see that the modem application
file is on my hard disk though.

If the modem has been installed correctly you will see a reference to in
Device Manager and also in Control Panel |Phone and Modem Options.
You will also be able to query modem here to see if it is working
correctly, can you do all of this.
