I have a new PC on which I installed XP Pro SP2. Initial install runs fine
and PC runs beautifully. After a while it starts downloading and applying
Windows Updates. The sequence is as follows:
1. Windows Installer update - reboot - PC runs OK
2. 39 security updates - reboot - PC runs OK (except SBS Client Application
Crashed)
3. 29 updates (including IE7) - reboot
4. PC now endlessly reboots. Cannot F8 into any mode.
I ran Windows repair and got the system working again and it runs fine until
those updates are installed and Windows gets trashed.
Reformatting and reinstall get the same results!
Has anyone got any ideas here? I suspect hardware but have been wrong before

Hardware is custom-built as follows:

ASUS P5kpro mainboard
Intel Core2 QuadQ6600 CPU
Leadtek PX96900 GT video adapter

Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP

Certainly, as you say, worth a shot, but doesn't seem to apply to the
pre-repair situation.

Second link is a good one, too, but PC was behind ISA, hardware firewall,
Windows Firewall and Trend Micro Security Client was installed and running.
Relatively secure, I guess.

All moot, since every other XP Pro SP2 PC on this network is getting updates
with no issues from WSUS 3.0, running on my SBS 2003 server. Just this one
PC is comprehensively wrecked to the point where logs are not available.
Windows does not run, period. I suppose I could go fishing for log files
with Windows PE (and I will when I get the PC back from the shop where I
bought it). I have never struck anything like this with name-brand PCs. I
guess I needed a refresher course on why I should never buy no-name boxes.
