XP Pro daily slowdown/disconnect
Posted by UC_Bearcat_99 on January 23rd, 2008

Ok folks...I am at a loss here. Everyday at about 2:30pm, one of my client
desktops slows downs to a snails pace and then randomly disconnects from the
Windows 2000 server. The only cure is to re-boot. Log-off/log-on sometimes
fixes it but it seems to be best to fully shutdown. None of the other 5
desktops (all running XP Pro SP2) shows this behavior.

Network layout is fairly simple. Linksys WRT54G router (handles DHCP & DNS)
uplinked to Linksys 8-port switch in which all desktops and network printer
are connected to.

Some of the items I have tried include:
1. Check for extra running apps (virus scan, spyware, etc) on the desktop -
none found
2. Check for extra running apps on the server - none found
3. Rebuild problematic desktop operating system - no cure
4. Replace problematic desktop totally - no cure
5. Replace network switch/cabling - no cure
6. Assign manual IP address/ DNS addresses - no cure

Items I have not tried but will if advised:
1. Create a new profile for the user - could a profile be corrupted to the
point in which it exhibits a seemingly timed slow-down/disconnect?
2. Replace router - server does NOT handle DHCP/DNS - but why would only 1
person be affected?

The things are stumping me most is that two totally seperate PCs exhibit the
exact same problem so it must be in the network hardware or profile correct?

Thank you for any support can be provided - Jim

Any Scheduled tasks set for about that time?

I didn't look for that....the unfortunate part is that there have been so
many "admins" to this network, with each person contributing in their own
unique ways.

I will look for scheduled tasks....most likely it would be on the server
requesting something from the client since a new pc did nothing to cure the
issue.

Thank you for the suggestion.....Jim
