- xp re-install--advanced option... nowhere to go.... reinstall...
- Posted by katintokyo on October 27th, 2005
I have recently had to reinstall xp about 5 times. the most recent time, I
just started installing software. The install shield never came up, so i
tried to exit and had to resort to the task manager to end process. THen I
got "an error has occurred..." I reported the error and checked the details.
It suggested I install sp2. I clicked on windows update to install it, but
it froze also ("explorer.exe is not responding"...) and I sent another error
report ... checked details and suggestions... please install xp sp2... I
tried again and it happened again. I then entered the system restore
function through control panel. Click on system restore and "cannot find
entry point to sysytemrestore.....WYNSYS.dll... " so no system restore. Then
I rebooted.
Again, when I restarted, I tried Windows update, but no luck ... frozen "not
responding" so I tried other internet sites and they were ok. I ran Norton
Antivirus, and nothing. I tried windows update about 10 times. No luck, but
eventually I got in by using the microsoft website and searching for other
things, and by the roundabout route, I finally got to the install page for
sp2! so I installed service pack 2. When I hit "restart computer" at the
end of the installation, it rebooted and took me to the advanced boot
options, i.e, start windows in safe mode, safe mode networking/command
prompt/last known settings/normally. NONE of these started windows! Just
rebooted the computer and took me to the same "dos" screen again!
I really need help. I have had this problem for over a week in various
forms, installed Xp from reformat 7 times and have no idea where to go from
here.

But for better results, create a new Windows XP CD
with SP 2 slipstreamed, then "clean install" Windows XP.
Either one of the following utilities makes slipstreaming
(integrating) SP2 into Windows XP a breeze:

or
AutoStreamer 1.0.33 (preferred)

Start with some basic hardware troubleshooting. Test the memory using
these two products. They will create a bootable CD. Run the memory
diagnostics for a while on each one, not just one pass each.
Memtest86+
http://www.memtest.org/
Windows Memory Diagnostic
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp
Test the hard drive. Download a drive diagnostic utility from the drive
manufacturer's web site. This will create a boot floppy or CD. Boot
from that and run the diagnostics on the drive.

Once again you prove that you don't know WTF you're talking about. The
OP has done several clean installs. It shouldn't matter what SP level a
clean install comes from, if it fails it fails and the OP is looking at
probable hardware problems, you stupid clown. Your habitual copy-pasted
"sound advice" absolutely worthless, as usual.
Thank God he got some decent advice from Rock, a *REAL* MVP!
