XP suddenly won't recognize portable music player
Posted by seeeker on October 29th, 2005

I have SP 1 installed.

XP always used to recognize my Creative Nomad Jukebox 3. Then it
stopped doing so.

Nothing happens when I plug it in either with the firewire or the usb2
connection.

If I go the Add New Hardware route, it is listed under 1994 or usb
devices, but then when I troubleshoot under USB for example, XP tells
me "USB Device Not Recognized -- one of the usb devices attached to
this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it."

HOWEVER, when the device is connected to the computer, and I go the
Creative website, and click its Automatic Software Update, the device
lights up and the website can download the latest software and drives
to it! And they are on there, when I check the device drivers.

So the remote website can talk to and download to the Nomad Jukebox,
but XP still can't recognize it.

Advice much appreciated!

Thanks!

Try to unistall the drivers then re-install them. Will the Jukebox work on
other computers?

I should add, that XP recognizes all other usb and firewire devices I
attach.

I can't get out of the house because of a medical problem, but I had
someone who works for me plug it into the usb port of a windows 2000
machine in her other office. that machine immediately recognized it
and the wizard asked for the driver. i hadn't given her the driver
and there wasn't time to go look for it online.

now, that would sound good, that the machine recognized it, except
that the screen of the portable device didn't change to the "connected
to computer" logo. i think it should have done that even without the
drivers on the windows 2000 machine installed, no?

In reality, it is not "connected" until the computer "communicates" with
it. And that isn't going to happen until the computer has the correct
drivers to "speak" to it.
