xxx.exe not a valid win32 application
Posted by Alex on December 9th, 2007

Recently when ever I try to install a programme, I get this message "
xxx.exe not a valid win32 application".

I also not able to run some of the dos commands at cmd screen, like
sysedit,,,

This is what I have done so far:

- xp pro
-checked for viruses and sptware
-Checked autoexec.nt , config.nt and command.com

Please help.

Thanks

I can only give you my own experiences, but that command, unlike many
cryptic messages from Windows, means exactly what it says: That program
will not run under a 32 bit version of Windows. Is the program designed
for 64 bit? (that's the most common reason for that message).

Addendum: Do you meant that *any* program you try to install suddenly
gives you that message? If that's the case, hopefully others here can
help - you got me on that one.

Did you download the file off the internet? If so, the download could
be corrupted. Download a new copy of the file.

If all executables give the same error message, try the EXE association
fix here. Also the LNK fix:

Fix File Associations.

Just some of the programmes. Thses apps work ok on my other pc. I think
something gone wrong with the DOS section of xp, so I reinstalled
autoexec.nt and.... but no luck.
