AS 4.1 disconnect
Posted by CR on March 26th, 2006

Device: MDA Pro (HTC Universal) WM5
PC: WinXP, SP2
PIM: Outlook 2003
Sync: ActiveSync 4.1

Issue
I've got two computers: one at home, one notebook (Toshiba Tecra S2) at
work. For my PDA to make sense, I need to sync with both of them.
Syncing my home PC was - and is - no problem.
Then I got my new notebook, installed it and everything worked, sync
and all. So far so good. Unfortunately the notebook stopped to sync
about three weeks later.
Symtoms are: the green "wheel" starts to turn, the PDA is identified,
"Looking for changes" appears - and then the connection is lost <..>
and the green "wheel" turns grey (sad, really!). If I have AS running
in foreground on the PDA I can see that AS is still trying to sync when
the PC is offline already. Syncing with my PC at home still is no
problem.

As the machine in question is a company notebook I can't be 100% sure
that there haven't been any automated updates - which I however doubt.
And: I am trying to sync with outlook directly (not Exchange).

To get rid of this annoying situation I:
* Switched from ActiveSync 4.0 to 4.1
* Tried differnt USB cables and ports
* Uninstalled IntellyType
* Uninstalled IntellyPoint
* Disabled the Windows Firewall
* Disabled TrendMicro Office Scan
* Disabled WLAN, BT, IRDA
* Used Outlook both online and offline
* Uninstalled the Nokia Sync Suite (which was initally installed when I
got the notebook)
* Disabled the Outlook Caching Mode
* Repaired Outlook
* Repaired the .pst and .ost files
* Cleansed the Registry
* Repaired the operating system (sfc)
* Uninstalled and re-installed AS4.1(including manually deleting the
left-over files and profiles)
* Uninstalled and re-installed Outlook
* Soft-resetted the PDA (about 100 times in total...)
I* nstalled all software updates for XP and Outlook

Result: worse, if anything...

IMHO all there's left is
* Hard-resetting the PDA (which I'd rather not; it's quite some effort
to install it)
* Wipe the notebook and re-install it from scratch (actually that's not
an option as it is a company notebook)
* Exorcism (can't find my torches right now...)

The longer I fiddle around, bigger the issue gets. I can't even partner
now. The sequence of events:
* Uninstall AS 4.1, delete all left over files and logs
* Boot notebook
* Start Outlook in offline mode (no LAN, WAN, BT or anything on or
connected)
* Notebook partnership removed on PDA
* Soft reset-PDA
* Install AS 4.1 (Build 4841) - everything left to default.
Installation of software is successful (at least it says so)
* PDA switched on, connected to the notebook via USB
* PDA is recognized, name is displayed, sync assistent is started
* Computer name set, Exchange Access disabled, Syn for contacts,
calendar, action items, notes set
* "Continue"
* After a couple of seconds I get a WCESMgr message telling me: "Die
Synchronisierung kann nicht erfolgreich abgeschlossen werden. Stellen
Sie eine neue Verbindung zum Geräte her..." or, in English "The
synchronization cannot be completed. Reconnect the device and try
again... (roughly translated, sorry 'bout that)". My ony choice here is
the "ok" buttin. Green wheel is grey, but the PDA still shows
"connected"
if I hit "ok" it says "not connected".
* Strange enough, wenn looking into AS on the PDA, I can see all my
setting there. I.e.: AS managed to transfer both name and sync settings
before it died.
* PDA unplugged
* PDA plugged in again. Result: PDA name recognized, sync assistant
starts. The rest is the same as above...

Any help in this matter is highly appreciated. I'm chewing my PDA
already...

Cheers
CR
