ActiveSync 4.0 does not detect WM5 device

I am having a problem with my new Mobile 5 device - when I plug in the usb
cable ActiveSync on my laptop says 'Connecting...' and then just stays in
that state forever - it never gets to the 'Set up partnerships' screen. My
laptop is XP sp2

I have tried the following:
- hard reset the device
- reinstall ActiveSync 4 on my laptop
- updating usb drivers on my laptop
- a different usb cable

Nothing makes any difference.

If I plug in a WM2003 device it is recognised immediately

I also tried plugging my WM5 device into someone else's laptop with AS4 - it
recognised it fine.

Seems to me it is my laptop setup that is causing the problem but I dont
know what else to try

Any suggestions?
