- activesync recognizes my iPAQ as guest
- Posted by Sandy Eyster on November 16th, 2004
Hi folks,
I hope that someone can help. I have an iPAQ 4155, with Windows Mobile
2003 and Active sync 3.7.1. I had no problems initially (I have owned
it for about 3 months, I'd guess, but over the past few weeks, I have
had an increasing number of instances where it does not properly sync
with my pc. Most recently, I've been starting up my activesync, and
opening it, so see that the partnership is correctly specified (as
something other than guest, and the name that I'm using). As soon as I
put my iPAQ in the cradle, it connects, but does so as guest. I am thus
unable to synchronize.
I have tried various combinations of soft rebooting my iPAQ, restarting
my pc, using task manager to end wcesmgr.exe and wcescomm.exe, and
registering .dll files (per other threads in this group). But nothing
seems to consistently work. At times, it will inexplicably recognize
the correct name and synchronize, but if I come back later in the day
and reset my iPAQ in the cradle, it connects as 'guest' again. I have
done a hard reset (twice in the past two weeks, I'd estimate).
Unfortunately, then I have to reinstall a bunch of software, and start
up another partnership profile (I don't know how to get it to recognize
one that already exists).
I have read that there can be problems with antivirus software. My
office uses Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition, and version 8.00.9374
is currently installed on my pc. I have requested an upgrade from my IT
folks, but don't know how long it will take for that to happen.
Any suggestions?

An upgrade of Symantec Antivirus is definitely needed - that version
causes some problems with ActiveSync.
Also take a look at http://www.cewindows.net/faqs/activesync/guest.htm
for some further suggestions (such as reinstalling IE).

I tried the reinstallation of IE, but no luck. I cannot upgrade
Symantec, but will continue pursuing that angle. Any other suggestions?

I'd pursue the upgrade of Symantec AntiVirus first, to get that out of
the way.
Also, are you running any firewall software?

Dear all,
Had the same problem. Now it´s solved!
I removed Active sync AND used the program Registry Mechanic!!
It found several Active Sync issues that were stil in my Registry.
After a reboot I installed Active Sync and everything is working fine!!
So my message to you people who have Active Sync problems i.e. Guest issues,
do use an extra Registery cleaner.
Regards,
Ron
