Cannot copy large files from PC into DELL Axim x51
Posted by Robert Janik on December 20th, 2005

I can't copy big files via USB from PC to DELL Axim x51 (to SD memory) using
explorer, copy&paste. I updated ActiveSync from 4.0 to 4.1. With ActiveSync
4.0 I was able to copy 236MB file, but I'm unable to do it with ActiveSync
4.1.

I tried to copy AVI and MPEG file. No file conversion is done, system starts
to copy the file immediately, progress bar is showing that copy is working,
but after about 5 min. it starts from the beginning. No error message.
I calculated that copy should take about 12 min., but it is still trying to
copy file from the beginning after 30 min.
I can copy small files - several MB, but not hundreds MB or 1GB.
I double checked that SD card isn't locked.

I don't know if it is really ActiveSync issue. Maybe there is some
networking problem, system resets the connection after some time. This is
common problem on windows operating systems.

Try a soft reset and see if that helps any... also try rebooting the

Almost all serious users have abandoned activesync as a file transfer
method to and from the ppc and it's memory card and use card readers
instead.

Note that you can "sync" media files directly to a card in a card reader.

Of course I restarted both machines, because I was trying to do this for
several days.

I finaly found the problem in slow ActiveSync and broken progress bar.
When I opened another explorer instance I found the file I was trying to
copy. Its size was 64kB and it wasn't increasing, so I thought there must be
some problem. But when I removed PDA from cradle in the middle of the
process. I found this file in SD and it had 356MB.
So I opened screen with information about memory in use on PDA and I was
able to monitor how copy works. It is slower than what would one expect. It
means that information in Windows Explorer about file size is false, it
should report increasing file size and not fixed value of 64kB. And of
course progress bar shouldn't start from the beginning, because it looks
like if network connection was reset.

This time I was extremely patient and waited until copy was finished (about
850MB - 3 hour movie, 640x352).

I found some advice about using third party applications (like ftp). Maybe
it will be better solution then ActiveSync.

Anyway thanks for trying to help me.
It was my stupidity to expect it will work like if I was connected to
another machine on the network.

Yeah, I learned that the hard way.

It reminds me old MS-DOS and copy-floppy style of work.
I thought that networks have the future. You know, I might switch on the
device and drag&drop what I want to take with me without thinking about it.

you can also copy files via wifi from a shared location to the ppc...
has to be done from the ppc...

It's been a while (using card reader is so easy) but seem to remember
that there were problems copying from a share directly to the sd card.
