Contact Database Erased During Synch--Recoverable?
Posted by BrianK on October 22nd, 2004

I recently upgraded to Windows XP and Office 2003 on my laptop, which
resulted in some synchronization problems with my iPAQ Pocket PC--there were
duplicates in my contact database.

So I deleted the duplicate contacts on my laptop, then deleted all contacts
on my iPAQ, expecting them to synch up. However, it ended up (I'm not sure
how) deleting all of the contacts on my laptop as well. I had synch set to
use the laptop as primary, but they're gone.

Any idea if the contacts can be recovered? I cannot access them on either
the laptop or the iPAQ (and no, I don't have a backup of either).

Check if they are in the deleted items folder.
If you are using exchange, Ask you Admin to help you recover the content
from the server.

Sorry I can't help you get them back but want to correct a misconception you
have. You cannot set the laptop as primary. You can set a standard for
conflict resolution, for when there is a conflict. That means that a change
in a piece of info, contact, calendar entry, etc, has been made on both the
PPC and the PC between syncs. You could change the time of an appointment on
the PPC and the location of that same appointment on the PC. That's a
conflict. You can have the PC overwrite, leaving the wrong time in both
places, or the PPC to overwrite leaving the old location. You can have it
prompt as well, and then can choose which incorrect entry to keep.

When you deleted the contacts on your PPC you did not create a conflict, and
the system dutifully reflect your deletion on the PC.

For those that want a work around, you can uncheck contacts sync, sync,
delete all the contacts on the PPC, sync, recheck Contacts sync and sync
again. It will inform you that it has not sync'd contacts before, do you
wish to combine or overwrite the PPC with the PC data. Doesn't matter which
you choose since the PPC is empty of contacts
