Device name changes on its own after sync with Vista
Posted by AD on March 1st, 2008

Hi everybody!

I have 2 PCs and a Windows Mobile 6 device (HTC 3600) used to sync
between them. The two PCs are:

1. Desktop with Windows XP SP2 and ActiveSync 4.5
2. Laptop with Windows Vista and WMDC 6.1

I set the name of my device to HTC_3600 in the device itself. Set up
partnership and synchronize with XP, then with Vista. Then when I go
back to XP, in ActiveSync I can see the name of my device has changed
to WINDOWSMOBILE47.... If I rename it back to HTC_3600, it tries to
create new partnership. I delete old partnership, create a new one,
but after synchronizing with Vista, the device name changes again to
WINDOWSMOBILE54.. Same thing with other devices - it changes their
names to HTC29, and other random names....

So I wonder if there's a way for Vista not to change the name of my
mobile device? I want it called HTC_3600 and nothing else, and I want
to be able to sync with other devices and name them to whatever is
convenient for me. There's is no such problem if I sync between two
computers running XP.

Thank you!

Hi,
With Vista, it will rename your device based on the name of the user that
logs into the PC.

Thank you, Chris!

I log in to Vista with the same name all the time (there's just one
user - me), so you're saying Vista will rename my mobile device just
once to something like WINDOWSMOBILE99 and this name will stay? I can
live with that I guess, but it is still strange that Vista tells me
how I should name my devices.... I was thinking of adding another WM
device to sync, but I'll think twice....

Wow. If that's true, that's yet another reason to dump
Vista. I never noticed that happening in the month I ran
Home Premium on my Fujitsu before wiping it for XP -
I was using a hX2750 and syncing between two laptops -
one with W2K and AS 3.7.1 and WMDC on the Vista
machine.

Vista just has waaaayyy too many problems.

Sorry, I'm not much help, except to tell you that I'm having the EXACT same
problem. I sync with my Vista machine, then when I sync with my XP machine it
changes the device name to WINDOWSMOBILEXX, where XX is some incrementing
number. What I really love is that it creates a new synchronized file folder
each time.

Anyone from Microsoft listening?
