- exchange active sync, 0 items in inbox
- Posted by Rich R on August 18th, 2005
i've got a windows bile 2003 device which i have on trial, i've configured it
to sync wireless, it seems to work, there are no errors and it says
'synconising 33 ot 154' items etc. when it's done, it says last sync and the
correct time. however, my inbox, tasks and contacts remain empty.
oddly, the folder structure of my inbox remains, so i can see all my
folders, they are empty too, even if i select them to be sycn'd they dont
populate. if i send an email from the device, it goes fine.
what's going on? is this a permissions issue or something? we're using sbs
2003 SP1 for the server, if does the same thing if i use the wireless LAN of
the VPN over GPRS.
i really cant see i've done anything wrong, anybody else got this problem?
using the cradle is not an answer, as the point of us using these devices is
for exchange activesync mainly.
thanks for reading, hope to hear from you!

in fact yes i did.
it turns out to a "by design thing", but it looks like MS have now decided
they are in th wrong and have released a hotfix.
it's KB 894065
the longer story is this.
if you have an exchange intergrated antivirus, you have to have active
scanning on and background scanning on. and then it works, BUT this causes
side effects, including a performance hit on exchange, lock-ups on some AV
programs (i had to get mine updated) and once those issues were solved, i
found my 7 hour backup started taking 15 hours due to it scanning every email
when backing up. which was unacceptable. i therefore removed active and
background scanning, and applied the hotfix, it works fine now.
if you have a small business, and your backup only takes an hour or 2, then
the active/background scanning thing will probably work better for you.
you'll need to refer to you AV vendor for information on how to swicth this
on if it's not obvious form the interface.
hope this helps! this issue cost me hours.......but not the £200 MS wanted
to take my phone call fortunately!
