My contacts won't synchronise
Posted by Ben76 on March 14th, 2006

I have an Orange SPV C500 mobile phone, with Windows Mobile 2003 Second
Edition. On my PC is Active Sync 3.8. The PC has Windows XP (probably also
SP2 but not 100% sure. The Outlook version is 2002.

I want to upload my phone contacts (170 of them) onto my PC, but here's what
happens - the Active Sync Window says it is synching the contacts, but only
gets half way and gets stuck. The green circle thing is still spinning,
suggesting that something is happening but in fact nothing is happening and
it just stays like that. To stop this I need to do CTRL ALT DEL and end
task. A grand total of three contacts appear in my Outlook desktop contacts,
but that is all.

Could someone tell me what is wrong?

Hi,

This might be due to some kind of data corruption in Contacts. I would
suggest running the Scanpst utility to check for any corruption in the PST
file (the file that stores your Outlook data). Search for scanpst.exe on
your computer. You will need to run it against the .pst file.

If that doesn't help, create a new contact folder in Outlook, and select all
your contacts and move them into this folder, connect your device and then
move the contacts in small sets to the original folder and allow it to sync.
This way you should be able to identify the errant contact(s). You might
need to recreate the ones that don't sync.

Hi Raj,

Thanks for your reply. I tried the scan.pst but it found no errors.

As for the further action - it does not apply in my case. i am trying to
upload all of the contacts from my phone onto my PC. There are no existing
contacts in Outlook on my PC - the Contacts are completely empty apart from
the three which appear from my phone.

Yours,

Ben

Hi Ben,

Have you tried synchronizing after a soft reset?

Should be covered in the manual for your device. It's basically rebooting
the device without clearing the files and registry to their default states.
Hard reset, which is much more extreme, essentially returns the device to
factory configuration, deleting any files you've written, etc., as well as
the registry.
